*1. What is a Biokineticist and what do you do?**

A Biokineticist is a clinical exercise specialist registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). We are qualified to assess, prevent and treat injuries, chronic conditions and movement dysfunctions through scientifically based, personalised exercise prescription. We use exercise as medicine to improve physical function, performance and overall health.

**2. Do I need a referral from a doctor to see a Biokineticist?**

No, you do not need a referral. You can book directly with us. However, many clients are referred by their doctor, physiotherapist, orthopaedic surgeon or chiropractor after injury, surgery or for chronic disease management. If you are referred, please bring any relevant medical reports or scans to your first appointment.

*3. Are your services covered by medical aid?**

Yes. Biokinetics is covered by most medical aid schemes in South Africa. Coverage and benefits depend on your specific plan and whether funds are allocated from your major medical, chronic, or wellness / preventative benefits. We provide detailed accounts and reports for submission. We also offer professional fitness evaluations and testing as required by medical aid providers for wellness programmes.

**4. What should I expect during my first visit?**

Your first session is a comprehensive assessment lasting approximately 60 to 90 minutes. We will discuss your medical history, current complaints, lifestyle and goals. This is followed by a physical assessment which may include posture and movement analysis, range of motion, muscle strength, body composition, cardiovascular fitness and functional tests relevant to your condition. From this we develop a personalised treatment and exercise programme.

**5. What is the difference between a Biokineticist and a Physiotherapist?**

We work closely together, but our roles are different. Physiotherapy focuses on acute pain relief, manual therapy and initial rehabilitation immediately after injury or surgery. Biokinetics takes over in the final phase of rehabilitation and beyond, using structured exercise to restore full function, correct movement patterns, prevent re-injury, improve strength and conditioning, and manage chronic disease long term.

**6. What conditions can a Biokineticist help with?**

We assist with a wide range of conditions including:

*   Orthopaedic injuries, joint and muscle pain, and post-surgical rehabilitation

*   Chronic disease management including diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and obesity

*   Posture and movement correction to reduce pain and improve everyday function

*   Sports conditioning and performance enhancement

*   General strength and wellness programmes for individuals of all ages

**7. What should I wear and bring to my appointments?**

**8. How many sessions will I need?**

This is entirely dependent on your condition, goals and medical aid requirements. Some medical aid fitness assessments are once-off. Rehabilitation, chronic disease management and sports performance programmes typically require ongoing sessions over several weeks. After your initial assessment, we will discuss a recommended treatment plan and timeline with you.
